Grandsapp

How it works

Three parts: a tablet that shows, the family's phones that edit, and a server that connects them and cannot read the family's content.

The tablet

Grandsapp becomes the tablet's home screen. The tablet sits on a table or a shelf, on and plugged in, and shows the board: the layout of tiles the family puts together (Clock, Outside, Photos, Reminders, I need, Messages, Call). The person with the tablet has no account and types nothing: everything is a tap on a big button or a voice note.

The rules of calm are built in: large text and strong contrast, one tap and no swiping, nothing flashes, no sound louder than the limit the family sets, and a stop button always on the screen. Every change the family sends is announced by a calm notice on the board.

The tablet needs Android 5.0 or newer, and Android 6.0 or newer and a camera for video calls. Everything on the tablet is in Croatian.

The family's phones

The Grandsapp for the family app runs in the browser on any phone, Android or iPhone. Someone in the family creates it, pairs the tablet and invites the others with a link. Everyone in the family sends photos, sets reminders, records messages, calls the tablet and changes the board. Whoever manages the family also invites and removes members and pairs the tablet.

Notifications reach the phone, for example: the tablet has no internet, a reminder was not confirmed, the tablet asks for something from the list, someone is bringing it, a message was played, the tablet is calling. They say only what happened, who and at what time, never a reminder's text, a message or a picture.

The server

The server connects the family's devices: it knows which devices belong to which family, relays what they send, keeps what the tablet needs when it starts again and sends notifications. It runs on Cloudflare.

Encrypted end to end

The family's content is encrypted end to end. The family's key is made on the first phone and travels to the family's other devices locked with their own keys; the server never has it. Every family made in the app is encrypted from its first moment. When pairing, the phone and the tablet show a Device code of sixteen characters: if they match, the phone handed the family's key to that very tablet.

The server sees what it cannot work without: the names of the family and its members, which devices are in the family, when something was sent and how large it is, the tablet's battery, who calls whom and for how long. It does not see photos, messages, reminder texts, the list, the board or the name of the person the tablet is for. The details are in Privacy.
